IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT DONATING UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE
New POPs regulations now apply to donated upholstered furniture such as sofas, office chairs, footstools, and futons.
WHAT ARE POPs?
‘Persistent Organic Pollutants’ (POPs) are toxic chemicals previously used in the manufacture of soft furnishings. POPs do not break down and, in high concentrations, can be harmful to humans and animals. If they accumulate in landfills, they can damage the environment and, if not disposed of properly, pose health risks to waste management workers. Items containing POPs therefore cannot be sent for recycling or landfill disposal and must instead be separated from general waste and incinerated.
WHICH ITEMS CONTAIN POPs?
- Sofas
- Sofa beds
- Armchairs
- Kitchen and dining room chairs
- Stools and foot stools
- Home office chairs
- Futons, bean bags and, floor and sofa cushions
- Electrical recliner chairs
